1 By design
Try to keep all sanitaryware (except the bath and shower cubicle) wall-mounted, as this makes cleaning the floor easier. Keep as many items as possible behind cupboard doors and use a wall-mounted loo-brush holder.

2 Surface selection
An ideal choice is smooth porcelain tiles, and preferably large ones to reduce the number of grout lines, which attract dirt. The use of glass wall panels is another option. Marble and limestone are all porous so need higher maintenance. Also consider how easy materials are to care for: certain limescale removers are not suitable for use on pressed steel, cast iron or aluminium.

3 Finishing touch
Choose sanitaryware with a special finish to protect against limescale, such as WonderGliss, available on Duravit and Laufen products.
